Sequoia National Park is the
second-oldest in the United States, as it was established
in 1890. You will cross the Pumpkin Hollow Bridge, which
was constructed in 1922 and encounter a massive carving of
Paul Bunyan from a redwood trunk carved in 1941-2.

There are several alternatives
for lodging -- all in the same general range of old
motels. We prefer this one due to the nice summer pool
and the accouterments of unit S-1.
There is a very nice unit at the
Gateway lodge which is perched directly on the river, but has
a Franklin stove rather than a fireplace. Another
alternative (we've not stayed there) is the Lazy "J" Ranch
cottages (559.561-4449 or 800.341.8000) just east on Highway
198. Deep in King's Canyon, Cedar Grove might be worth a
try late in the season (closes November 1 -- April
30)
But for non-smokers, I suspect
the MudHole Jewel in the area would be the Lake Elowin Resort
(10 cabins; just one with a fireplace).
WHEN TO GO AND HOW TO GET
THERE:

Three Rivers is
located on Highway 198 at the south entrance to King's
Canyon National Park.

In the winter
months, the location is temperate and un-crowded.
These highways could be unbearable in summer, in a long line
of cars behind a camper, for
instance.

At the Sierra Lodge, Unit S-1 allows smoking, has a living
room with fireplace, is away from highway traffic, and has a
kitchenette. Other rooms have better views.

 We last visited
this property in January 2002. This location was visited
several times earlier, with documentation verifying 1994 &
