Montecito is
perhaps mid-way between Mussel Shoals (see elsewhere within
the website) and Santa Barbara. There are a variety of good
restaurants and beach access from the area.
This part of southern California
was first settled by the Chumash Indians. The area was
claimed by Spain in 1542 and Sabastian Vizcaino's ship
anchored offshore on December 4, 1602 -- on the Feast Day of
St. Barbara, giving the channel and shoreline its
name.
Charlie Chaplin came along much
later, participating in the financing of the Montecito Inn
along with Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle. The Inn opened on
February 16, 1928. Wallace Beery, Carole Lombard, Marion
Davies, and Lon Chaney Sr. were among the first
guests.
