As with most of the Beyond MudHole properties, it is essential to visit out-of-season in order to keep both the cost and the crowds down.

The spacious grounds and the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed main building -- dark and brooding -- make this a very special destination.  We suggest late July or early August, to avoid the late-season thunderstorms.

 ATTRACTIONS
  • Annual Ostrich Festival in March  www.ostrichfestival.com
  • Tovrea Castle and Carraro Cactus Garden; when this property reopens after renovation, the tour will be worth the trip itself.    Then eat at The Stockyards (what an appetizing name!) across the street from the south entrance.

The Castle is located at 202 Van Buren (48th & Washington).  The Castle and grounds were constructed from 1928 to 1930 and was intended to be a hotel.  Neighboring landowners, however, developed their adjoining properties as sheep and cattle stockyards and feedlots -- making this a less than desirable tourist destination.  The original owner, Alessio Carraro, then sold the property to Della Tovrea in 1931.  Della lived in the catle, at least parttime, until her death in 1969.
